Abstract

The study of emotions in organizational life became well established in Work and Organizational Psychology, in organizational behavior research themes, in congresses’ main topics, and in organizational consultants’ practice, in training and counseling services.
As we assist to an increasing interested invested in this topic, a brief review of the papers published on emotions at work reveals four types of problems, sometimes outlined as future directions for study: 1. inconsistencies in the conceptual framework (the conceptual distinctions among emotion-disposition-affect-feeling); 2. questionable quality of experimental designs and research methods used; 3. a limited area of research themes; 4. a low practical impact of the results extracted from data collected in studies (and the need of acquiring skills to work with emotions in organizational settings). Consequently, we face the lack of a coherent theory of emotions in organizations.
In reviewing some of the characteristics of the theoretical and methodological framework for emotions in the organizational literature, we can track some explanations for the lack of a consistent theory, and further explore the prerequisites for designing research and formulating theory in this field.
